Final Project

Due: January 5th, 2009

Description:

Throughout the semester we will be learning a skillset that builds on top of knowledge learned at each session. The final project is meant to be a culmination of that knowledge applied in some way that can benefit you as an educational professional.

You will build a website that proves knowledge in each domain of knowledge covered in class, those domains are:

  • HTML/XHTML
  • Cascading Stylesheets (CSS)
  • Digital Design
  • Publishing

The content of the site is up to you but it is my suggestion that it be something useful to you as you will find more interest in working on it. The overall site topic does not need to be approved with me. Some suggestions would be a website

  • to support the courses you teach or the program you support
  • to communicate with parents
  • to share extended resources with your students
  • portfolio
  • to share pictures, text, and media with your families
  • anything else you would be interested in making

Time to work

There will be no time to work on this project during class, all of the online sessions are independent work time scheduled into the course. It is expected that you are working on your site during this time, but is not required that you work on the site during scheduled class time. I will be available via email, instant messenger, and phone (if necessary) to answer questions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I just update an existing site I have?
Nope. The content of this class is taught as you will teach website development to students, from the ground up so it would defeat the purpose of the class content for you to simply update a site you currently have.

With that said, you certainly may recreate a site you have as long as you begin from scratch and build up using the skills we learn in class.

Will I be given space on the web to put my site?
Yes. In session 2 I will be giving each of you an FTP account for a subdomain of dhsaoit.org. Your website address will look something like http://jdoe.dhsaoit.org.

Do I have to use the FTP account you gave me?
No, but make it extremely clear where I (and others) can find your site. I would suggest setting up a redirect or at bare minimum placing a notice on your course supplied homepage where the site can be found (the url).
